26-1-2024 (BANGKOK) US National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, is scheduled to engage in discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Bangkok over Friday and Saturday, as both nations aim to deepen dialogue amidst complex global dynamics.
The announcement of the meeting was made by the Chinese Foreign Ministry in a separate statement, signifying a concerted effort to enhance communication between the world’s two largest economies.
This high-level engagement follows a pivotal meeting just over two months ago, during which US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping convened for approximately four hours on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit in San Francisco.
During the Apec summit, Biden and Xi reached agreements to establish a presidential hotline, revive military-to-military communications, and collaborate on curtailing fentanyl production. However, contentious issues surrounding Taiwan remained unresolved.
Adrienne Watson, spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, underscored the significance of the upcoming meeting, citing it as a continuation of the commitment established at the November 2023 Woodside Summit between Presidents Biden and Xi. The objective remains to sustain strategic communication and responsibly manage the bilateral relationship.
In addition to discussions with Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Sullivan, who directly reports to President Biden, is slated to hold meetings with Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and Deputy Prime Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-nukara, who also serves as the foreign minister.
Watson emphasized that Sullivan’s engagements will reaffirm the importance of the longstanding US-Thailand treaty alliance and partnership. The discussions will encompass opportunities to bolster cooperation across various bilateral and global issues, reflecting the shared commitment to advancing mutual interests and fostering stability in the region and beyond.
