5-9-2023 (ATLANTA) A United States airline flight en route to Barcelona, Spain had to turn back and make an emergency landing after a passenger experienced a severe diarrhoea incident on board. The incident caused a biohazard issue, forcing the pilot to prioritize the safety of the passengers and crew. The flight, which was operated by Delta Air Lines, was already two hours into its journey from Atlanta, Georgia when it had to reverse its course.
According to Flightradar24, a popular aircraft tracker site, the flight, identified as DL194, was diverted due to the unfortunate incident. An audio transmission between air traffic control and the pilots, shared on social media, revealed the seriousness of the situation. The pilot informed the control tower about the biohazard issue, stating that a passenger had experienced diarrhoea throughout the entire aircraft. As a result, the decision to return to Atlanta was made.

Passengers on board the flight described the experience as traumatic, with one individual mentioning that the odorous spillage had dribbled down the aisle, creating an unpleasant atmosphere. The cabin crew attempted to mitigate the situation by using vanilla-scented disinfectant, but it only worsened the smell. Emergency medical personnel were called to assist the affected passenger upon landing.
The airline took immediate action, initiating a thorough cleaning process that involved removing the soiled carpet. Passengers praised the ground crew for their efficient response in replacing the carpet and ensuring the aircraft was clean and odor-free for the subsequent flights.
Delta Air Lines addressed the incident by stating that it was caused by a “medical issue” on board, without specifying further details. They apologized to the passengers for the delay and inconvenience caused by the incident. Despite the setback, the airline managed to resume its subsequent flights without any further issues.
