20-11-2024 (WASHINGTON) A senior US military commander has raised concerns about depleting American air defence stockpiles, as ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East continue to draw upon crucial military resources.
Admiral Sam Paparo, commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command, acknowledged during a public engagement that the deployment of Patriot missile systems and air-to-air missiles to conflict zones has significantly impacted US military readiness. “To say otherwise would be dishonest”, the admiral stated frankly.
The situation poses particular challenges for America’s strategic position in the Asia-Pacific region, where China represents what Paparo described as “the most capable adversary in the world”. This admission comes at a sensitive time, as the Biden administration continues to provide sophisticated air defence systems to both Ukraine and Israel.
Recent deployments include comprehensive air defence support to Ukraine, featuring Patriot missiles and National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile systems. The Middle East has also seen significant US military commitment, with the deployment of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) systems and approximately 100 military personnel to Israel. Additionally, US naval forces are actively engaged in protecting maritime traffic in the Red Sea from Houthi rebel attacks.
