20-2-2024 (TOKYO) Unusual warm air surges from the south resulted in record-high temperatures along Japan’s Pacific Ocean coast regions on Tuesday, as reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
By 2 p.m. local time, an astounding 78 locations across Japan had set record-high temperatures for February, indicating an extraordinary heatwave for the winter month. Takasaki and Isesaki in Gunma prefecture notably experienced temperatures exceeding 25 degrees Celsius, a historical first for February, according to the JMA.
Even central Tokyo witnessed warmer conditions resembling late April to mid-June, with temperatures soaring to 23.7 degrees, marking the highest recorded temperature this year.
The meteorological anomaly was attributed to the influx of warm air from the south, affecting the regions near Kanto. Despite the unseasonable warmth, weather officials anticipate a return to winter cold on Wednesday.
