20-2-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) Foreigners, including illegal immigrants, have reportedly amassed hundreds of millions of Ringgit in unpaid medical bills at government clinics and hospitals in Malaysia. The outstanding bills cover a range of medical services, including maternity care, emergency treatments, outpatient check-ups, and medications.
A Berita Harian report highlights that these foreigners, utilizing various tactics, including making promises to pay later, often vanish after receiving treatment. This leaves the Ministry of Health (KKM) to absorb the losses and settle the debts.
As of the end of 2023, the cumulative arrears for foreigner-related treatments have surged to approximately RM100 million, according to recent data.
“When foreigners are mentioned, it includes those with refugee status, whether registered or unregistered, as well as illegal immigrants seeking treatment at public health facilities. Treatment is provided to foreigners based on human rights and sympathy, even if their status is suspicious or if they are illegal immigrants,” shared a source from KKM.
The source revealed that despite foreigners registering and paying a deposit in advance, many evade settling their treatment bills, often citing lack of funds or making unfulfilled promises to pay later. The issue is particularly challenging as these individuals may disappear after receiving care.
The foreigners with outstanding debts to government health facilities hail from 38 different countries. Apart from Asian nations such as India, Myanmar, and Indonesia, the list includes individuals from the United Kingdom (UK), the United States (US), Germany, Finland, Singapore, Sweden, and Japan.
KKM is reportedly engaging in discussions to address and find solutions to this escalating issue.
