2-1-2024 (MANILA) Local fishermen have discovered an unmanned underwater vehicle believed to be of Chinese origin off the Philippines’ central coast.
The torpedo-shaped vessel, bearing the marking “HY-119”, was found by three fishermen approximately five nautical miles off San Pascual, Masbate province, local authorities confirmed yesterday. The discovery comes amid ongoing tensions between Manila and Beijing over territorial disputes in the region.
Regional Police Director Andre Dizon told reporters the unmanned vessel, measuring roughly two metres in length and equipped with stabilising fins, possessed features consistent with underwater surveillance technology. “Our preliminary investigation suggests this device is part of China’s underwater navigation and communications network,” Dizon said.
The yellow-coloured submersible, which has been described as unarmed, features sophisticated monitoring equipment including an antenna and optical sensors. Police have flagged potential national security concerns following the discovery.
