8-3-2024 (LOS ANGELES) A United Airlines flight bound for Osaka, Japan, was forced to divert to Los Angeles International Airport after a tire fell from the plane and landed on cars in a parking lot shortly after takeoff. The incident occurred on a Boeing 777-200 aircraft carrying 249 passengers and crew, all of whom landed safely with no reported injuries.
Videos shared on X by RadarBox captured the dramatic moment the tire detached from the aircraft, as well as footage showing the damaged vehicles in the parking lot.
According to United Airlines, the 777-200 model has six tires on each of its main landing gear struts, and it is designed to land safely even if some tires are missing or damaged. The airline assured passengers that a replacement aircraft would be provided to transport them to Osaka. Additionally, United Airlines stated that it would collaborate with the owners of the affected vehicles to address their needs.
