2-10-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) A routine morning of chores took an alarming twist for a 65-year-old Malaysian woman recently when she found herself on the receiving end of a baby crocodile’s bite at her home in Kampung Balik Batu, Tanjung Bidara, Masjid Tanah.
Faridah Abd Ghani, the victim of this unusual encounter, was taken aback as she stepped outside her house to attend to her cleaning duties. What should have been an ordinary start to her day quickly transformed into a startling experience.
“I just stepped out the door and was surprised when I suddenly felt something bite my left leg,” Faridah recalled.
Faridah initially mistook the source of the bite, thinking it might have come from a monitor lizard. She had just begun tidying up her veranda at 6 in the morning, and the dim light of dawn added to her confusion.
“It was still early in the morning and dark; I thought it was a lizard that bit at first and immediately called a family member,” she explained. It was her son who eventually unraveled the mystery, realizing that the culprit was not a lizard but a baby crocodile. Had it been a lizard, it would have scurried away.
With the baby crocodile now identified, Faridah’s son took quick action, covering the animal with a lid and promptly contacting the APM (Angkatan Pertahanan Awam Malaysia).
Faridah revealed that her house’s proximity to the beach had given her glimpses of crocodiles swimming in the waters off Tanjung Bidara beach. However, this marked the first time a crocodile had ventured into a resident’s home, fortunately leaving her without any injuries.
Lieutenant (PA) Shahrul Riza Saiful Bahry, from the Pegawai Pertahanan Awam Unit Masjid Tanah (UMT), explained that the UMT Operations Control Center received an emergency call from the public at 6:04 am in response to the incident.
A team of four members promptly arrived at the location, successfully capturing the baby crocodile, which is believed to have strayed from its natural habitat. The reptile was subsequently handed over to the Department of Wildlife Protection and National Parks (PERHILITAN) for further action.
