11-6-2023 (TAIPEI) The owner of two vans parked on the roof of a building in Taichung has dismissed concerns raised by neighbors, assuring them that the building’s structure is made of sturdy concrete and steel bars.
One of the vans seems to fit perfectly within the multi-leveled rooftop space, while the other is partially resting on the building’s parapet, extending slightly over the edge. In response to the growing unease, the owner, speaking to the China Times on Friday (June 9), confidently stated, “It’s not going to have any impact on the building, so there’s no need to make a fuss.” This came after city officials and the police requested that the vehicles be removed.
According to reports from CNA, the owner, identified as a contractor, had repeatedly faced fines for parking the vans on the street. Frustrated with the situation, he decided to enlist the help of a crane to lift and place the vans on his rooftop. Local borough chief, Lin Kuan-jen, mentioned that the vans had been in their current position for two years.
Although the owner’s actions did not violate any laws, he has agreed to comply with the request to remove the vans. When asked about the future of the vehicles, he revealed that they will be relocated to the Taoyuan mountains sometime around October.
While the unusual sight of vans parked on a rooftop has caused some concern among residents, it appears that the building’s structure remains unaffected. As the owner plans to address the issue and find an alternative parking arrangement, the unique rooftop display in Taichung will soon become a thing of the past.
