26-7-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) A house in Batu Caves, Selangor, caught the attention of many as a unique ceremony was held to shave the first hair of not one, but two babies. Initially, onlookers believed that the babies were twins, but in fact, they are the child and grandchild of a 43-year-old woman named Nooraida Sohaimi.
The joyful news of pregnancy was first shared by Nooraida’s 23-year-old daughter, Nurul Nazatul Shahira Mohd Jasni. Little did they know that shortly after, Nooraida herself would also be confirmed pregnant, with the news of the two pregnancies coming just over a week apart. Nooraida expressed her surprise, stating, “My child is already 13 years old, so I never expected to have another baby.”
Both mother and daughter went through different delivery experiences, with Nurul Nazatul Shahira giving birth naturally at 39 weeks, while Nooraida had a Caesarean section at 36 weeks due to her high blood sugar levels from diabetes. Reflecting on the experience, Nooraida shared, “The blood sugar levels from diabetes were too high, leading the doctors to advise me to have an induced early delivery at 36 weeks. I gave birth at 11:32 am, and my daughter delivered her baby at 4:01 pm on April 20 at Umra Hospital in Selayang.”
The ceremony to shave the babies’ first hair, known as “berendoi” in Malay culture, was a joyous occasion, and many present mistook the babies for twins due to their strikingly similar appearances.
Nooraida added, “When my daughter and I were pregnant, people also said we looked like sisters. We can now celebrate our children’s birthdays together or send them to the same school, it’s really special.”
