28-4-2024 (MANILA) The presence of an unauthorized Chinese research vessel in the northeastern vicinity of Viga, Catanduanes has been confirmed by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), according to a statement released on Sunday.
The AFP initially spotted the China-flagged vessel named “SHEN KUO” on Thursday, April 25, approximately 60.9 nautical miles east of Rapu-Rapu Island in Albay. Reports from Tactical Operations Wing Southern Luzon, which conducted a maritime patrol on April 27, indicated that the vessel was “lying-to in the area and had no personnel on the main deck.”
Despite repeated attempts to establish communication with the vessel through regular radio channels, the AFP stated that all efforts were unsuccessful, suggesting a lack of responsiveness or willingness to engage on the part of the vessel.
In response to the situation, the AFP has directed nearby vessels to intensify surveillance and report any developments. Additionally, they are coordinating with relevant agencies to address the unauthorized presence of the Chinese research vessel and investigate any potential illegal activities that may be taking place.
