25-1-2024 (MANILA) UN Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of the Right to Freedom of Opinion and Expression, Irene Khan, held talks with representatives from the DOJ to address key issues related to human rights and freedom of expression in the country.
During the meeting, various topics were raised, including the alarming trend of red-tagging, which refers to the labeling of individuals or groups as communists or terrorists without sufficient evidence. Red-tagging has been criticized for its potential to incite violence and endanger the lives of those targeted.
Media killings were also discussed, highlighting the need to ensure the safety and protection of journalists in the Philippines. The country has been marred by a high number of media-related killings, raising concerns about the freedom of the press and the ability of journalists to carry out their work without fear of reprisal.
Other issues covered in the meeting included the proposed anti-terrorism law, the role of social media platforms in the dissemination of information, and the challenges faced by human rights defenders and activists.
The discussions between Khan and the DOJ representatives aimed to foster a better understanding of the human rights situation in the Philippines and to identify areas that require attention and improvement.
The UN expert expressed her commitment to working with the Philippine government and various stakeholders to address these pressing issues and promote the protection of human rights and freedom of expression in the country.
The DOJ, for its part, assured Khan of its cooperation and willingness to engage in constructive dialogue to address the concerns raised.
