26-7-2023 (KUALA LUMPUR) Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has questioned the government’s approach in dealing with alleged offenders of 3R (race, religion, and royalty) issues while the laws are still under review.
In a tweet, Dr Mahathir expressed his skepticism regarding the actions taken against those accused of violating the 3R boundaries. He highlighted that the Law Minister had previously stated that the government is in the process of reviewing 3R-related laws. However, the government has already initiated actions against individuals allegedly involved in such offenses.

The former prime minister further questioned the extent of the Prime Minister’s authority to enact laws independently, raising concerns about the constitutionality of such actions.
On July 21, Law and Institutional Reforms Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said had announced that existing laws related to 3R issues might be repealed, and new legislation could be introduced to address these concerns. The government is actively reviewing current laws to assess their relevance and effectiveness in the present century.
Minister Azalina pointed out the challenges faced by authorities in enforcing existing laws, particularly in light of rapidly evolving technology and the prevalence of social media platforms. The ease of disseminating information, often anonymously, has posed unique enforcement challenges for the authorities.
