22-2-2024 (MANILA) Tragedy struck on February 21 as a truck carrying passengers to a livestock market on Negros island in the central Philippines plummeted down a ravine, resulting in the loss of fifteen lives, according to a rescue official. The incident occurred in the mountainous area near Mabinay, which has been a site of frequent road accidents.
Michael Cabugnason, a rescue official from Mabinay municipality, stated that witnesses reported the truck losing control as it approached a sharp bend in the road. Out of the 17 individuals onboard, only one passenger and the driver survived the horrific crash.
Rescue teams discovered the driver immersed in motor oil amidst the wreckage at the bottom of the ravine, approximately 50 meters below the road level, as recounted by Mr. Cabugnason.
Unfortunately, the Philippines experiences a high number of deadly road accidents, often attributable to drivers disregarding traffic regulations and vehicles being inadequately maintained or overloaded.
