12-7-2023 (SINGAPORE) Transport Minister S Iswaran is currently under investigation by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB), as confirmed by the agency. The nature of the investigation has not been disclosed in the statement released on Wednesday (Jul 12).
Responding to public interest in the case, CPIB acknowledged that the involvement of a minister in their investigation has attracted attention. However, due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, further details could not be provided at this time.
The bureau has emphasized its commitment to conducting a thorough investigation, displaying a strong determination to uncover the facts and uphold the rule of law.
In a separate statement, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong revealed that he was briefed by the director of CPIB, Mr Denis Tang, last Wednesday regarding a case that had been uncovered by the bureau. Seeking the Prime Minister’s approval, Mr Tang requested the initiation of a formal investigation.
Prime Minister Lee stated, “This would involve interviewing Minister S Iswaran, among others. I gave Director CPIB my concurrence on Jul 6, following which the formal investigation began on Jul 11.”
Prime Minister Lee has instructed Minister Iswaran to take a leave of absence until the investigation concludes. During this period, Senior Minister of State Chee Hong Tat will assume the role of Acting Minister for Transport.
CPIB, in its statement, reiterated Singapore’s firm stance of zero tolerance towards corruption. The agency emphasized its commitment to impartially investigating all cases and assured the public that it would not hesitate to take action against any individuals or entities found to be involved in corrupt activities.
