18-1-2024 (SINGAPORE) Transport Minister S. Iswaran has submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong amidst allegations of corruption investigated by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau. In his resignation letter, Iswaran vehemently denied the multiple accusations and expressed his determination to prove his innocence.
The Prime Minister’s Office released the exchanged letters between Iswaran and Prime Minister Lee on Thursday (January 18).
Iswaran tendered his resignation on Tuesday (16th) and followed up with another letter the next day, stating his intention to repay the ministerial salary and MP allowances he received during his suspension. In the letter, he conveyed that, in light of his inability to fulfill his duties as a minister and parliamentarian, his conscience led him to repay the relevant salary and allowances. Iswaran also emphasized that, regardless of the final verdict, he would not seek a refund of the salary and allowances.
Responding to Iswaran on Wednesday (17th), Prime Minister Lee expressed disappointment and sadness at Iswaran’s departure from politics “under such circumstances.” However, he underscored the necessity to handle such matters rigorously to uphold the integrity of the party and the government. Prime Minister Lee affirmed that such actions were crucial to maintaining the public’s trust and expectations.
The resignation comes after a probe by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau, which led to Iswaran’s arrest in July 2023. The investigation prompted Prime Minister Lee to instruct Iswaran to take a leave of absence until the inquiry concluded. During this period, Iswaran’s monthly pay was reduced, but he continued to draw his MP allowance.
