30-4-2024 (PHUKET) The Transport Minister, Suriya Juangroongruangkit, has announced plans for the construction of a 41.7-kilometre tram line in Phuket, with work anticipated to commence in September 2028 and operations expected to begin by December 2031.
Suriya disclosed that the Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) is currently reviewing and adjusting the tram line to align with the existing road infrastructure on the island province of Phuket. This process is crucial, considering the narrow roads and heavy traffic that the tram line will intersect.
The MRTA aims to complete the review and adaptation of the initial 41.7km tram line stretch from Phuket International Airport to the Chalong Intersection within six months. Following this, the revised project will undergo approval stages, including presentation to the MRTA board of directors and subsequent endorsement by the Transport Minister.
Suriya outlined the timeline for project approval, spanning from October 2025 to February 2027, involving the State Enterprise Policy Commission, the Public Private Partnership Commission, and Cabinet approval. The bidding and selection process for the tram operator concessionaire is slated to occur from March 2027 to August 2028.
Acknowledging potential traffic congestion during construction, the Highway Department plans to expedite the expansion of Highways 402 and 4027. These measures aim to minimize disruption to existing traffic flow.
Expressing confidence in project approval and progress, Suriya assured that the Phuket tram project would proceed as scheduled under his tenure as Transport Minister. Notably, the tram line will primarily follow Highway No 402, with provisions for tunnels in areas with narrow roadways.
Suriya affirmed his commitment to ensuring that Phuket residents benefit from lower tram fares compared to tourists, reflecting a focus on equitable access to public transportation services.
