29-3-2024 (PHNOM PENH) A tragic train accident occurred on Friday in Pursat province, located in northwestern Cambodia, when a train collided with a passenger bus at a railway crossing. The incident, which took place around 11:00 a.m. local time in Krakor district, resulted in 45 individuals being hospitalized, according to Sar Theng, the provincial police chief.
Sar Theng informed Xinhua via telephone that the collision caused injuries to all 45 passengers on board the bus, with five of them in critical condition. The bus, while crossing the train line, was struck by the train, causing it to flip onto its side. Prior to the crash, the train driver had sounded the horn multiple times to alert the bus driver.
In an effort to determine the cause of the accident, the police will review the footage from the bus’s onboard camera. They will specifically investigate whether the bus driver was using a mobile phone, potentially leading to their failure in acknowledging the train driver’s warning.
According to Sar Theng, the train involved in the incident was travelling from the capital city, Phnom Penh, and was en route to Poipet, a city situated on the border between Cambodia and Thailand.
It is worth noting that due to the utilization of aging rail tracks, trains in Cambodia typically operate at speeds ranging between 30 and 40 kilometers per hour.
