2-8-2024 (BANGKOK) A leisurely holiday in Thailand’s picturesque Chiang Mai province turned into a heart-wrenching tragedy for a Chinese couple when a freak accident at a popular zipline attraction claimed the life of the wife and left the husband seriously injured.
The incident occurred on Thursday at Jungle Flight Chiang Mai, a well-known adventure park in the Doi Saket district. Jing Chen, 44, and her husband Liu Yang, 46, were concluding their exhilarating zipline experience when disaster struck on a suspension bridge some 15 metres above the ground.
Eyewitnesses recounted the horrifying moment when a large tree unexpectedly toppled onto the bridge. The impact catapulted the unsuspecting couple into the air, sending them plummeting to the forest floor below. The force of the fall proved fatal for Jing Chen, who tragically succumbed to her injuries en route to the hospital. Liu Yang survived but sustained severe injuries, including a broken arm and leg.
In the aftermath of the accident, the Erawan Rescue Centre swiftly dispatched a team to the scene. Liu Yang was rushed to Chiangmai Ram Hospital in Muang district, where he is currently receiving treatment for his injuries.
The incident has sent shockwaves through Thailand’s adventure tourism industry and prompted immediate action from local authorities. Deputy Tourist Police chief Major General Pongsiam Meekanthong visited the bereaved family at the hospital on Friday to offer condolences and provide assistance.
Pongsiam informed the family about the insurance coverage provided by the zipline company, which includes a million baht payout in case of death and up to 500,000 baht for injuries. He assured them that the Tourist Assistance Centre would facilitate the claims process.
