15-2-2024 (KANSAS) One person has tragically died, and at least 21 others sustained injuries in a shooting that occurred in Kansas City on Wednesday. The incident took place after the parade and rally held to celebrate the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory. The Kansas City Police Chief, Stacey Graves, referred to the shooting as a “tragedy” during a media briefing on Wednesday. Three suspects have been detained for investigation.
Following the shooting, the victims were swiftly transported to various hospitals in the area. Eight individuals were in critical condition with immediately life-threatening injuries, while seven others had life-threatening injuries, according to Interim Kansas City Fire Chief Ross Grundyson.
Among the injured were 11 children aged between 6 and 15, who were treated at Children’s Mercy Kansas City Hospital. Stephanie Meyer, Senior Vice President, and Chief Nursing Officer, stated that nine of the patients were gunshot victims, while three were being treated for incidental injuries. Fortunately, all are expected to make a full recovery.
The total number of victims is still being determined by authorities investigating the incident.
Shockingly, Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a DJ at KKFI 90.1 FM, was confirmed to have been killed in the shooting. The radio station expressed deep sadness and extended condolences to her family in a statement. They urged anyone with information to contact law enforcement.
The shooting occurred outside, near the garage west of Union Station, as Chiefs fans were departing from the rally. The crime scene remains active, and investigators have a large area to cover, according to Chief Graves.
Law enforcement officials have recovered at least one firearm, but the motive behind the shooting remains unclear.
The celebration drew an estimated one million parade-goers, who had gathered to commemorate the Chiefs’ victory.
Witnesses provided accounts of the chaotic scene that unfolded after the rally. Arnold Sauther, a paradegoer, mentioned that fans followed the Chiefs players into Union Station to obtain autographs. Suddenly, everyone started running out, and police officers rushed in, indicating that something had happened inside the station.
Another witness, Jennifer Wilbers, reported hearing gunshots and immediately fleeing the area. She described seeing a person lying on the ground nearby. A woman who hid near an elevator with others recounted their fearful moments, praying for safety until they were able to leave when officers arrived.
Expressing her anger, Chief Graves emphasized that those attending the celebration should have expected a safe environment. Approximately 800 law enforcement officers were present during the parade and rally.
Fortunately, all Chiefs players, coaches, and staff members are confirmed to be safe.
Several players, including Patrick Mahomes, Drue Tranquill, and Trey Smith, took to social media to express their thoughts and prayers for the victims. They commended the bravery of first responders and expressed their heartbreak over the tragic incident.
Missouri Governor Mike Parson and his wife were present at the celebration when the shooting occurred. They confirmed their safety and expressed gratitude for the professionalism and swift actions of security officers and first responders.
President Joe Biden has been briefed on the shooting, according to the White House.
