26-1-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) Tragedy struck in Malaysia’s Cameron Highlands as a landslide occurred in the early hours of January 26, claiming the life of one man and leaving four others feared buried alive.
According to Mr. Ismail Abdul Ghani, assistant director of operations at the Pahang Fire and Rescue Department, search and rescue efforts are currently underway. The distress call was received by the department at 2:51 am, as reported by Bernama.
The incident took place at Batu 54 in Blue Valley, a small town located in the renowned hilly tourist destination of Cameron Highlands.
Preliminary information suggests that there are three adult men and one adult woman still trapped beneath the landslide. However, their identities have yet to be confirmed, stated Mr. Ismail in a recent statement.
The first team of nine firefighters had to trek approximately 3km to reach the scene due to the challenging terrain.
The landslide has caused disruptions to traffic, as reported by Sin Chew Daily.
Free Malaysia Today informed that the search-and-rescue operation, led by the department’s special tactical operation and rescue team, involves the use of tracker dogs to aid in locating the missing individuals.
