2-4-2024 (ISTANBUL) A devastating fire broke out during daytime repair work at a nightclub in Istanbul, Turkey, resulting in the loss of at least 29 lives, according to reports from state media on Tuesday.
The Istanbul governor’s office disclosed that an additional eight individuals sustained injuries, with seven of them in critical condition.
Located in the central Istanbul district of Besiktas on the European side of the city, the fire engulfed the underground nightclub, primarily affecting construction workers, as stated by the governor’s office.
The blaze ignited amidst ongoing renovations at the establishment, which was situated below ground level, according to Anadolu, the Turkish state news agency.
The Turkish Justice Minister, Yilmaz Tunc, revealed that arrest warrants have been issued for five individuals, including three nightclub managers and one person responsible for the renovation, as investigations into the incident intensify.
“The inspection of the site and the collection of evidence are currently underway. Additionally, a team of three experts specializing in occupational safety and fire is diligently working to identify the cause of the fire,” Tunc stated solemnly.
