26-4-2024 (MANILA) A 13-year-old girl in the Philippines tragically passed away from rabies after being tied to a hospital bed. The young girl, named Jamaica Star Seraspe, had been admitted to San Lazaro Hospital in Manila on April 5 after displaying symptoms of the disease. Medical staff, donning protective gear, were forced to restrain her due to her agitation. Unfortunately, she succumbed to the illness 12 hours later.
Disturbing footage captured by Jamaica’s mother, Roselyn Seraspe, shows the teenager restrained to the bed. Roselyn can be heard expressing her love for her daughter while questioning why she hadn’t been informed about the dog bite that led to the infection. According to Roselyn, Jamaica had bitten by a dog two months prior on February 9 at a local park but had concealed the incident from her parents.
Jamaica had disguised her wound as a simple scrape from a wire when her mother inquired about it. Roselyn had suggested getting an anti-tetanus shot, but the teenager dismissed the idea. In text messages discovered after her passing, Jamaica confessed that she knew she had contracted rabies but kept it a secret to avoid disappointing her mother. She had even researched the disease and understood the dire consequences of her silence.
Community officials managed to capture the puppy believed to have bitten Jamaica. It was revealed that the same puppy had bitten several individuals, including a 6-year-old boy who was promptly sent to the hospital. Sadly, the puppy passed away seven days after being caught.
In a poignant Facebook post, Roselyn urged other parents to be vigilant if their children exhibited unusual behavior and to educate them about the importance of reporting bites and scratches from animals.
