6-11-2023 (SYDNEY) A tragic incident unfolded in a popular tourist town in rural Australia, where a car crashed into a group of patrons on the front lawn of a pub, resulting in the deaths of five people, including two children, and several injuries, as confirmed by authorities on Monday.
The accident occurred on Sunday evening in Daylesford, located approximately 110 kilometers northwest of Melbourne, Victoria. The local police reported that four individuals lost their lives at the scene of the accident, while a young girl, who had to be airlifted to a hospital, succumbed to her injuries later.
The SUV involved in the incident mounted a kerb and then traversed a grassed area outside the Royal Daylesford hotel, as detailed by Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton during a media briefing. He explained that numerous people were present at the time, seated at tables when the vehicle collided with them.
At this stage, the police have not disclosed whether the victims were related to one another or whether speed played a role in the accident. They did confirm that the individuals who tragically lost their lives were not local residents. The authorities are yet to formally identify all the victims.
The precise circumstances surrounding the accident remain under investigation, and the driver, a 66-year-old man, was transported to the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening. A breath test confirmed the absence of alcohol in the driver’s system, and the police are planning to conduct an interview with him on Monday once he is released from the hospital.
