5-9-2023 (JAKARTA) Tragedy struck the Ayuterra Resort in Ubud, Bali, last Friday (Sep 1) when a cable on a lift snapped, resulting in the deaths of five resort employees.
The harrowing accident unfolded at approximately 1 pm at the Ayuterra Resort, according to reports from Indonesian media outlets.
The victims, comprising two men and three women from the resort’s housekeeping department, were aged between 19 and 24. They were inside an outdoor lift, which operates on a steep 60-degree incline, when the steel cable supporting it snapped, as reported by detikNews.
This lift was responsible for transporting both resort employees and guests up and down the slope of the property.
The Jakarta Post disclosed that the glass-encased lift plummeted approximately 100 meters down an embankment, claiming the lives of two individuals on the spot. Tragically, the three other workers succumbed to their injuries after being transported to a nearby hospital.
Bali Discovery, an online news website, added that one of the employees was thrown into an adjacent river ravine during the horrific incident.
A resort staff member recounted the horrifying moment, stating that he heard screams followed by a deafening crash. Upon investigating, he discovered that the lift had disappeared from view.
Ubud police are actively investigating potential negligence and maintenance lapses. Preliminary findings, as reported by The Jakarta Post, suggest that the cable snapped due to overloading, potentially causing it to exceed its weight-bearing capacity.
Ubud police chief commissioner Made Uder commented, “It is possible that the steel cable was not strong enough to pull the load and the safety wedge or brake did not work.”
Linggawati Utomo, the owner of Ayuterra Resort, conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families. She also announced that the resort would cover funeral expenses and provide additional forms of compensation to support the affected families, as reported by the Bali Express website on Saturday.
