22-4-2024 (JAKARTA) A tragic incident unfolded at the renowned Ijen volcano in East Java, Indonesia, claiming the life of a tourist who fell into a ravine while attempting to take a photo at the crater’s edge.
The victim, identified as 31-year-old Ms. Huang Lihong, was visiting the popular tourist destination accompanied by her husband, Mr. Zhang Yong, aged 32. Reports suggest that during a guided tour on Saturday (20 April), Ms. Huang lost her footing while posing for a photograph and tragically plummeted into the ravine.
The incident occurred despite warnings from their tour guide about the hazardous conditions near the volcano’s crater. Allegedly, Ms. Huang attempted to reposition herself for a better photo opportunity, inadvertently tripping over her long clothing, which led to her fatal fall.
Local authorities swiftly responded to the emergency, dispatching an evacuation team to retrieve Ms. Huang’s body. After a challenging operation lasting nearly two hours, rescuers located her lifeless body approximately 75 meters below in the ravine.
Head of Section V of the East Java Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA), Dwi Sugiharto, confirmed the tragic outcome and classified Ms. Huang’s death as an accident. He emphasised the importance of caution for visitors exploring the Ijen tourist site, urging vigilance and adherence to safety guidelines.
