14-6-2023 (ATHENS) A heartbreaking incident unfolded early Wednesday off the southwestern coast of Greece, as reports from local media indicate that at least 17 migrants lost their lives when the fishing boat they were on capsized. The tragic event occurred in international waters, approximately 47 nautical miles (about 54 miles) southwest of the town of Pylos.
Fortunately, over 100 other migrants who were aboard the vessel were rescued following the accident. State broadcaster ERT revealed that Greek authorities received the alert about the sinking fishing boat from the Italian coast guard. In response, a large-scale search and rescue operation was launched and is currently ongoing.
The ill-fated fishing boat reportedly set sail from the Tobruk region in northeastern Libya, a perilous journey spanning over 300 nautical miles across the Mediterranean Sea with the aim of reaching Italy. However, tragedy struck as the vessel capsized, plunging those aboard into the treacherous waters.
The Greek coast guard swiftly mobilized its resources to aid in the rescue efforts. Presently, six coast guard vessels are actively participating in the operation, complemented by an air force helicopter, a navy frigate, and several private boats. The joint efforts of these rescue teams are dedicated to locating any survivors and providing them with the necessary assistance.
The rescued migrants have been transported to Kalamata, a city located approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) northeast of Pylos. Hospitals in the area have been placed on standby to provide medical care and support to those who survived the tragic incident.
Local media outlets reported that, of the migrants initially taken to the hospital in Kalamata, at least four were in good health. These individuals have been fortunate enough to escape the worst consequences of the boat’s capsizing.
