13-12-2024 (KUALA LUMPUR) In a dramatic pre-dawn confrontation, a 31-year-old tow-truck driver with an extensive criminal history was fatally shot during a police operation in Kota Bharu’s Jalan Kubang Pasu district.
Kelantan’s Chief of Police, Commissioner Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat, revealed that the deceased suspect had amassed a substantial rap sheet, including 24 previous offences predominantly linked to drug-related activities.
The incident unfolded during a routine crime prevention sweep in Melor, where the suspect attempted to evade authorities by fleeing in his vehicle. “The situation escalated rapidly when officers cornered the suspect at approximately 5:30 am,” Commissioner Mamat told reporters at the scene.
According to police accounts, the suspect, upon abandoning his vehicle, exhibited hostile behaviour and opened fire on officers, compelling them to respond with lethal force in self-defence.
A subsequent search of the crime scene yielded several weapons, including a semi-automatic firearm, an imitation pistol, and a machete. Investigators also discovered a package of tobacco, which authorities suspect was intended for illicit distribution within the prison system.
Commissioner Mamat indicated that the investigation remains active, with officers exploring potential connections to other individuals. “We’re conducting a thorough probe to determine whether this incident is linked to a broader criminal network,” he stated.
The deceased’s remains have been transported to Hospital Tengku Anis for forensic examination.
