13-9-2023 (PERU) In a remarkable medical rescue in Taratopo, northeastern Peru, doctors have successfully saved the life of a two-year-old boy who accidentally ingested eight injection needles while playing. The incident has brought to light the importance of child safety and awareness in agricultural areas.
Dr. Efrain Salazar, one of the medical professionals involved in the case, explained, “It was once we were in the operating room and we opened up his abdomen that we found those metal pieces, (and realised) they were really needles.”
Local reports indicated that these needles were originally used for vaccinating farm animals in the area where the boy’s mother works. The child’s name has not been disclosed to the public.
The incident occurred in Taratopo, an agricultural community located approximately 622 kilometres away from the capital city of Lima. The boy’s mother speculated, “Maybe he swallowed them when he was there playing.”
Fortunately, the young boy’s life was not in immediate danger following the surgery, according to local media. This extraordinary case serves as a reminder of the need for heightened child safety measures and the secure storage of potentially hazardous objects, especially in regions closely associated with agriculture.
