13-10-2023 (BANGKOK) Tragic news emerged on Friday morning, as reports confirmed the death of a 30-year-old woman who was critically injured in the Siam Paragon shooting incident that took place on October 3rd. This incident involved a 14-year-old boy who opened fire with a modified blank gun inside the luxurious shopping mall located in the heart of Bangkok.
The woman’s passing marks the third fatality resulting from the shooting. The incident sent shockwaves through the city, leaving the community in mourning and seeking answers about the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
Investigations revealed that the 14-year-old boy had purchased the gun through a Facebook page. Shortly after the incident, three individuals were apprehended for supplying the weapon and ammunition to the teenager. Subsequently, three more individuals were arrested the following day in connection with the case.
Upon being brought in for questioning at the Pathumwan police station, the teenager appeared confused, claiming that he had heard voices urging him to shoot people, as shared by Pol Gen Torsak Sukvimol, the national police chief. In light of his mental state, he was admitted to a psychiatric hospital on October 6th.
The shooting resulted in the deaths of two individuals—an unfortunate female tourist from China and a female employee from Myanmar who worked at the shopping mall. Additionally, five others sustained injuries during the incident.
One of the injured victims was Penpiwan Mitthampitak, aged 30. She suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head and rib cage and was receiving treatment for her serious injuries at the King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital. However, after ten days of battling for her life, Penpiwan tragically succumbed to her injuries and passed away at approximately 2 am on Friday.
Pol Maj Gen Nakharin Sukhonthawit, commander of the Metropolitan Police Division 6, stated that the legal proceedings against the teenage shooter would not be altered. The police investigators had already filed premeditated murder charges against him. However, they will update their probe report with the latest details regarding the fatalities and injuries. The investigation report will include the results of autopsies conducted on those who lost their lives in the shooting.
