23-5-2023 (Taipei) The Ramen Boy, a Taiwanese restaurant, has unveiled an extraordinary addition to its menu—a new ramen dish featuring giant isopod, a remarkable deep-sea crustacean. The dish showcases the unique flavors of this unusual creature, with the restaurant carefully preparing it by removing the stomach viscera and steaming the remaining meat within its shell. According to The Ramen Boy, the white meat of the giant isopod resembles the taste of succulent lobster and crab, while the yellow glands offer a delightful sweetness akin to crab paste.

Priced at NT$1,480 (US$48), this extraordinary dish is exclusively available to the restaurant’s loyal customers due to the limited supply of giant isopods. The announcement caught the attention of Animal Planet Taiwan, which shared valuable insights into these fascinating creatures. Giant isopods are solitary inhabitants of the deep sea, dwelling at depths ranging from 170 to 2,140 meters.

Naturally carnivorous, they feed on various marine organisms and have a penchant for slow-moving marine life. The specimens served at The Ramen Boy were carefully sourced near the Dongsha Islands
