14-9-2023 (SINGAPORE) Tharman Shanmugaratnam has officially assumed the role of Singapore’s ninth President, following his resounding victory in the recent election, which saw him secure a landslide win. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Istana on Thursday (Sep 14).
In a momentous occasion, Mr. Tharman took his oath of office in the State Room of the Istana, in the presence of esteemed guests that included former Presidents Halimah Yacob and Tony Tan, as well as members of the Cabinet.
During the September 1 election, Mr. Tharman secured a remarkable 70.41% of the vote, which included overseas ballots. This significant margin of victory solidified his position as the President-elect. His closest rivals in the race, former GIC Chief Investment Officer Ng Kok Song and former NUTC Income Tan Kin Lian, received 15.72% and 13.87% of the vote, respectively.
Following his election win, Mr. Tharman expressed his surprise at the level of endorsement he had received from the citizens of Singapore. He characterized the outcome as a “remarkable unity” demonstrated by the people of Singapore.

Prior to Mr. Tharman’s inauguration, a farewell ceremony was organized for Madam Halimah, who had completed her six-year term as President. Her tenure officially concluded on Wednesday, marking a transitional moment in Singapore’s political landscape.
