6-1-2025 (BANGKOK) Thailand’s tourism sector demonstrated robust recovery in 2024, recording a significant 26 per cent increase in foreign tourist arrivals following strategic moves to ease entry requirements and eliminate visa restrictions for Chinese visitors.
Official data released by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports reveals that approximately 35.5 million international tourists visited the Kingdom last year, marking a substantial rise from 28.2 million in 2023. The tourism revenue surged by 34 per cent, reaching 1.67 trillion baht (US$48 billion).
Whilst falling marginally short of the ministry’s ambitious 36.7 million target, the figures closely aligned with the Bank of Thailand’s forecast of 36 million visitors. The performance indicates steady progress towards pre-pandemic levels, when Thailand welcomed nearly 40 million tourists and generated US$60 billion in tourism revenue in 2019.
The Kingdom’s tourism outlook for 2025 remains particularly optimistic, bolstered by several key factors. The anticipated release of the critically acclaimed series “The White Lotus” – filmed at various luxurious Thai resorts – is expected to showcase the country’s stunning locations to global audiences. Additionally, Thailand’s recent legalisation of same-sex marriage is projected to strengthen its appeal among LGBTQ+ travellers.
Government projections suggest tourist arrivals could reach an unprecedented 40 million in 2025, whilst domestic tourism is expected to contribute approximately 200 million trips. Combined, these could generate tourism revenue of 2.8 trillion baht, providing a substantial boost to the national economy, where tourism accounts for roughly 12 per cent of GDP and supports nearly one-fifth of employment.
China has reasserted its position as Thailand’s primary source market for international visitors, recovering from its post-pandemic decline. Malaysian and Indian tourists complete the top three source markets, underscoring Thailand’s enduring appeal in the Asian region.
