21-9-2023 (NEW YORK) Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin engaged in a pivotal meeting with Gianni Infantino, President of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), in New York on Thursday, marking a significant step towards bolstering collaboration between Southeast Asian nations and the global governing body for football.
In a social media post on Thursday morning, Prime Minister Srettha disclosed that the discussions primarily revolved around the augmentation of sports-related cooperation between FIFA and the member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Moreover, Prime Minister Srettha affirmed the collective readiness of Thailand and ASEAN to compete for the privilege of co-hosting the prestigious 2034 FIFA World Cup.
Thailand has been designated as the host for the 74th FIFA Congress scheduled for November 2024. This event is expected to welcome over 2,000 football organizers and players to the country.

In his social media update, Prime Minister Srettha expressed his belief that hosting the FIFA Congress could significantly boost the economy, citing the substantial commercial potential it offers. He underlined Thailand’s preparedness for this important undertaking.
Additionally, Prime Minister Srettha shared his personal passion for football and expressed hopes that his meeting with FIFA’s chief would pave the way for further advancements in football development within Thailand.
He also expressed gratitude to FIFA for its support in nurturing youth football in the country and for expanding the participation of national teams in the World Cup tournament.
Prime Minister Srettha is currently attending the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA78), taking place from September 18 to 24.
