15-11-2024 (BANGKOK) Thailand’s historic move to legalise same-sex marriage is projected to generate an additional US$2 billion in annual tourism revenue and attract 4 million more international visitors within two years of implementation, according to a groundbreaking study by digital travel platform Agoda.
The research, conducted in partnership with Access Partnership, reveals that Thailand’s marriage equality legislation, set to take effect from 22 January 2025, will position the kingdom as a pioneer in Southeast Asia’s LGBTQIA+ tourism sector. As Asia’s third nation to embrace same-sex marriage, following Taiwan and Nepal, Thailand is poised to capture a significant share of the global rainbow tourism market, currently valued at over US$200 billion annually.
The economic impact study projects substantial benefits across multiple sectors. Of the anticipated US$2 billion increase in tourism receipts, approximately US$700 million will benefit the accommodation sector, with food and beverage services and retail each expected to gain US$400 million. Transportation services are forecast to receive US$200 million, with the remaining amount distributed across entertainment and medical services.
The legislation is expected to create 152,000 full-time equivalent jobs, split equally between the tourism industry and the broader economy. These developments are projected to contribute to a 0.3% increase in Thailand’s GDP.
Pitichoke Chulapamornsri, Agoda’s Senior Director of Marketing, emphasised the platform’s commitment to inclusivity: “This report demonstrates how embracing diversity can drive substantial economic growth while promoting social progress.”
The study’s findings suggest Thailand could become a regional hub for LGBTQIA+ destination weddings, particularly appealing to couples from neighbouring countries where same-sex marriage remains unrecognised. The research also indicates potential opportunities for hosting major international LGBTQIA+ events, such as WorldPride.
Bangkok Pride Festival organiser Waaddao Chumaporn highlighted the legislation’s broader significance: “This act establishes Thailand as a truly inclusive destination while advancing equal rights for the LGBTQIA+ community.”
The research methodology, based on analysis of countries with similar legislation, shows an average 10% increase in international visitors within two years of implementation. The study also noted that 43% of LGBTQIA+ travellers have cancelled trips to destinations perceived as unsupportive of their rights.
