1-9-2023 (BANGKOK) Three influential figures in Thai politics, widely known as the “three Por brothers,” have officially exited the political stage as key members of the outgoing cabinet. Outgoing Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, outgoing Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon, and outgoing Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda, known for their close military collaboration and camaraderie, have stepped down from their political roles.
The “three Por brothers” nickname is derived from the first initial “P” in the names of Generals Prayut and Prawit, while General Anupong’s “P” comes from the first letter of his nickname, Pok. Their moniker reflects the strong bond formed during their years of military service and collaboration.
Gen Prawit, the eldest of the trio, announced his resignation as a Member of Parliament (MP) but confirmed that he would continue to lead the Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP). He stated that he would no longer be politically active, focusing solely on his role as party leader. The next in line on the PPRP party list is Santi Prompat, who is expected to assume the role of deputy public health minister in the incoming Pheu Thai-led government should Gen Prawit resign as an MP.
Gen Prawit also revealed that the Five Provinces Bordering Forest Preservation Foundation, which had been referred to by the media as his political headquarters, had been closed and would operate as a non-political foundation. He expressed enthusiasm for his continued work in the field of sports.
Gen Prayut, on his last day of work at Government House, emphasized his commitment to serve in a caretaker capacity until the new cabinet is inaugurated. After paying respects at Government House’s shrines, he expressed his wishes for blessings, peace, and prosperity for the nation.
Gen Prayut’s political journey began with the 2014 coup, during which he staged a military takeover amid political unrest. He subsequently served as prime minister, initially appointed in August of the same year. Following a general election in 2019, Gen Prayut was elected as prime minister by parliament. He announced his decision to exit politics in July 2023.
Gen Anupong, who also declared the end of his political career, stressed the media’s influential role in shaping and transforming society. He encouraged the media to hold influential figures accountable, regardless of the changes occurring in Thai society. As he steps away from politics, Gen Anupong intends to prioritize his health and embark on journeys to destinations he has long desired to explore, beginning with a trip to Japan.
As these three influential figures bid farewell to the political arena, Thailand awaits the formation of its new government and the unfolding of the nation’s political landscape.
