18-1-2024 (BANGKOK) Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara, affirmed the nation’s commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to Myanmar. During discussions on Myanmar at the World Economic Forum’s 54th Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, Mr. Parnpree emphasized that Thailand, in collaboration with ASEAN members, would actively work towards fostering peace in its neighbouring country.
In the dialogue, attended by Vice Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow and representatives from international organizations, Mr. Parnpree highlighted Thailand’s proactive role in promoting peace, stability, and unity in Myanmar alongside other ASEAN member states. He stressed the importance of inclusive negotiations involving all parties in Myanmar to achieve a harmonious and peaceful political resolution.
According to Mr. Parnpree, Thailand has already offered humanitarian support to Myanmar, particularly for citizens who sought refuge along the Thai border amid the unrest. The Thai government has engaged in discussions with Myanmar authorities to explore avenues for providing essential aid to citizens within Myanmar.
During a bilateral meeting with Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mr. Parnpree expressed Thailand’s satisfaction in hosting the regional office of the ICRC. He pledged continued humanitarian assistance in the region, emphasizing cross-border support for Myanmar.
Additionally, Thailand committed to supporting Laos as the ASEAN chair in promoting the bloc’s leadership in fostering dialogue and reconciliation, not only in Myanmar but also across the region.
In discussions with Ms. Spoljaric, the leaders addressed the conflict in Israel and Gaza, advocating for ceasefire negotiations to facilitate humanitarian aid. Mr. Parnpree urged the ICRC to continue its support for the safe release of the remaining eight Thai hostages at the earliest opportunity.
