4-11-2024 (BANGKOK) Thai Labour Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn has unveiled plans to expand the country’s workforce presence in Singapore, with a particular focus on the booming shipyard sector, following high-level discussions in the city-state over the weekend.
During meetings with Singaporean labour officials, business leaders and Thailand’s Ambassador Ureerat Chareontoh, Minister Ratchakitprakarn identified significant employment opportunities for Thai workers, particularly in shipbuilding and maintenance operations.
“Singapore’s maritime sector presents exceptional opportunities for Thai workers to enhance their skills whilst earning competitive wages,” the minister said following talks at the Thai embassy. “The shipyard industry is actively seeking welders, painters, and ship platers, with positions available immediately and no pre-employment testing required.”
Currently, approximately 4,000 Thai nationals are employed across Singapore’s various sectors, including construction, manufacturing, aviation, and electronics. The Labour Ministry sees potential to substantially increase this number, viewing overseas employment as a strategic approach to boost national income and develop a more skilled workforce.
The expansion initiative aligns with Singapore’s growing demand for skilled labour, particularly in construction and shipyard operations. “Singapore’s development projects are creating substantial employment opportunities, especially in maritime infrastructure,” Ratchakitprakarn explained.
The minister, who was accompanied by permanent secretary Boonsong Thapchaiyuth, emphasised that interested workers can access detailed information through provincial employment offices throughout Thailand. The initiative represents part of the ministry’s broader strategy to enhance Thailand’s labour export programme and secure valuable employment opportunities for its workforce.
Beyond the shipyard sector, Singapore is also seeking experienced workers in electronic component manufacturing and construction, offering Thai workers opportunities to develop expertise in multiple industries whilst contributing to their household economies.
