13-5-2024 (BANGKOK) In a resounding affirmation of Thailand’s prowess as a premier destination for international sporting events, the nation has opened its doors to the 74th FIFA Congress. This prestigious gathering, which commenced on Monday, has cast a global spotlight on the Kingdom, with over 3,000 figures from the worldwide football community descending upon its shores.
Participants from the six continental football federations and representatives from 211 member countries, including the esteemed FIFA President Gianni Infantino and football icons, have graced the event, which will run until Friday. The congress not only marks a significant achievement for Thailand but also serves as a testament to the nation’s unwavering commitment to fostering a thriving sports community.
Notably, Thailand has etched its name in history as the first ASEAN nation and the sixth in Asia to host this illustrious event, solidifying its position as a premier hub for international sports gatherings.
One of the highlights of the congress will undoubtedly be the official vote on Friday at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok. This highly anticipated decision will determine the host nation for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with a joint bid from Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands vying against a sole bid from Brazil.
Beyond the congress itself, a plethora of activities have been meticulously planned, ranging from friendly football matches featuring legendary players to community social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Among these initiatives is the inauguration of the Football Association of Thailand’s headquarters, funded by FIFA, further cementing the nation’s commitment to the beautiful game.
In a gesture of utmost hospitality and goodwill, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin will host a reception at Government House on Wednesday, welcoming executives and VIP guests of FIFA. The Prime Minister has expressed his delight at Thailand’s honor of hosting the conference, describing it as a proud achievement for the country. He has extended his gratitude to all government agencies for their collaborative efforts, which have afforded Thailand this remarkable opportunity.
Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and chairperson of the Culture and Olympic Heritage Commission, has warmly welcomed FIFA guests, stating, “I extend the warmest welcome to my comrade in the Olympic Movement, Mr. Infantino, the president of FIFA, together with all esteemed delegation from FIFA, to the 74th FIFA Congress in Thailand.”
Khunying Patama further emphasized Thailand’s steadfast commitment to promoting sports tourism as a cornerstone of its national agenda, believing in the power of sports to unite nations, foster cultural exchange, and promote goodwill across borders.
“Thailand offers a myriad of opportunities for sports enthusiasts and travelers alike. Whether it is exploring our world-class sporting facilities, engaging in local sporting events, or simply basking in the warm hospitality of our people, Thailand truly has something to offer for everyone,” she affirmed.
Additionally, Khunying Patama extended her congratulations to the Football Association of Thailand, its president Nualphan Lamsam, and former president Pol Gen Somyot Poompanmoung for their tremendous efforts and initiative in bringing the FIFA Congress to Thailand. This achievement, she declared, marks a significant milestone in the development of football in Thailand, the first country in Southeast Asia to host such a high-level event.
Ms. Nualphan expressed immense pride, stating, “Being the first in ASEAN and only the fifth in Asia to host such an event is a testament to Thailand’s capabilities. It’s the biggest off-field event ever to grace Thailand, and we believe it will leave a lasting impression on all attendees.”
Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, president of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau, believes the congress will not only generate revenue of over 228 million baht for the country but also create other positive economic impacts, adding approximately 126 million baht to the economy and generating over 160 jobs. Furthermore, he emphasized that the event solidifies Thailand’s position as the ultimate destination for global sports communities.
