25-9-2024 (BANGKOK) The Kingdom of Thailand is poised to modernise its tourist entry process as the Foreign Ministry contemplates the introduction of an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system. This innovative approach aims to simplify immigration procedures for international visitors, potentially transforming the arrival experience for millions of tourists annually.
Initially slated for a December 2024 launch, the ETA system’s implementation timeline is currently under review. The Foreign Ministry has emphasised that the exact rollout date remains undetermined, as discussions with various governmental agencies continue to fine-tune the system’s intricacies.
The proposed ETA system would cater to travellers from 93 countries that currently enjoy visa-free entry to Thailand. Under this new scheme, these visitors would be required to complete an online registration process prior to their arrival. Upon successful registration, tourists would receive a QR code, serving as their digital key to expedited entry through automated immigration gates at Thai ports of entry.
This digital transformation aligns with Thailand’s broader vision of transitioning to a comprehensive electronic visa system. The ETA is envisioned as a crucial stepping stone in this technological evolution of border management and tourist facilitation.
