28-8-2024 (BANGKOK) The Royal Thai Air Force has announced its decision to acquire Gripen fighter jets from Sweden, choosing the Nordic option over the American-made F-16s. This significant procurement decision marks a pivotal moment in Thailand’s efforts to modernise its air defence capabilities.
Air Chief Marshal Phanphakdee Phattanakul, the commander of the Royal Thai Air Force, revealed that an air force selection committee made the choice after carefully studying additional details submitted by both contenders on August 20. The decision-making process placed considerable emphasis on factors beyond mere aircraft specifications, focusing heavily on ancillary benefits such as technology transfer and training opportunities.
“After reviewing all of the factors, the panel chose the Gripen E/F over the F-16 Block 70/72 jets,” ACM Phanphakdee stated, underlining the comprehensive nature of the evaluation process.
The acquisition is part of Thailand’s broader strategy to replace a dozen ageing F-16s that are nearing the end of their operational life. The air force plans to initially purchase four new fighter jets, with the Gripen E/F model emerging as the preferred choice.
This decision comes at a crucial juncture in Thai politics, with the newly elected Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expected to form her cabinet in the coming days. The procurement still requires final approval from the incoming defence minister and the cabinet, adding a layer of political consideration to the military decision.
ACM Phanphakdee expressed confidence in the air force’s choice, emphasising the role these new aircraft will play in enhancing the force’s capabilities. “The new aircraft will play an important role in developing the capacity of the air force,” he said, adding that the fighter jets would “deliver maximum benefits in terms of the nation’s security and protecting its sovereignty.”
The selection of the Swedish-made Gripen over the American F-16 is noteworthy, potentially signalling a shift in Thailand’s defence procurement strategy. Traditionally, Thailand has maintained strong military ties with the United States, and this decision could have implications for the broader geopolitical landscape in Southeast Asia.
