27-12-2025 (BANGKOK) Thailand and Cambodia signed a joint statement on Saturday committing to a ceasefire along their border, including a 72-hour pause in fighting starting at noon local time on Dec. 27, tied to Thailand’s planned handover of 18 Cambodian prisoners of war.
The deal was reached during a Thai-Cambodian General Border Committee (GBC) meeting held at the Ban Phakkad border checkpoint in Pong Nam Ron district, Chanthaburi province. Thailand’s Defence Minister Gen Natthaphon Narkphanit attended the session, which lasted about 30 minutes. The Thai delegation was led by Gen Nuttapong Praokaew, Deputy Chief of Staff and GBC secretary, while Cambodia was led by Gen Tea Seiha, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence.
The joint statement anchors the ceasefire to the “Kuala Lumpur arrangement” agreed on Oct. 26, 2025, and incorporates terms discussed in earlier secretary-level talks. Under the plan, Cambodia accepted the 72-hour ceasefire in exchange for the transfer of the 18 Cambodian soldiers held by Thailand, according to the meeting readout.
An ASEAN Observer Team monitored the talks, led by Brig Gen Samsul Rizal bin Musa, Malaysia’s Assistant Defence Attaché to Thailand and head of the observer mission in Thailand. The developments were first reported by Reuters.
