29-6-2023 (BANGKOK) In a shocking incident on Thursday, a Thai woman collapsed suddenly on an escalator at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, resulting in the loss of half of her leg.
The Director of Suvarnabhumi Airport, Karen, revealed that the accident occurred around 8:30 a.m. The incident took place on an escalator located on the south side corridor of Terminal 2, between boarding gates 4 and 5. According to reports from Thai Geek News, images shared by the airport authorities indicate that the accident occurred at the end of the moving walkway. The victim was on her way to Nakhon Si Thammarat province when she suddenly collapsed on the moving walkway, and her leg got caught in the machinery, causing severe injuries up to her knee.
Karen explained the sequence of events captured on the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, stating, “From the CCTV footage, it can be observed that the passenger’s left leg was struck by a suitcase on the escalator. Subsequently, she fell, and her leg was pulled down.”
Airport staff responded promptly, providing immediate assistance and rushing the victim to the Piyavate Hospital for emergency medical care. All the elevators involved in the incident have been temporarily suspended, allowing the engineering team to investigate the cause of the accident.
In an official statement released at 11:30 a.m., the airport authorities confirmed their visit to the hospital to meet the victim and assured full support for medical expenses and compensation. The airport statement read, “We deeply regret the unfortunate incident that occurred at Suvarnabhumi Airport and will provide utmost care, covering medical expenses and necessary compensation.”
