17-3-2024 (PHNOM PEHN) Cambodian officials rescued 19 Thai individuals from a call scam gang in Oddar Meanchey on Saturday, as reported by the Suranaree Task Force.
Maj Gen Nat Sri-in, the commander of the Suranaree Task Force, stated on Sunday that approximately 30 Cambodian officials launched the rescue mission after receiving a distress call from one of the Thai victims who had been lured into working for a call scam gang in Oddar Meanchey.
According to the commander, the 19 individuals who were rescued were part of a group of about 50 people who had been enticed to work at a call scam center operated by Taiwanese individuals. This center was located within a casino complex near the Chong Chom border pass in Surin province’s Kap Choeng district.
The victims revealed that those who failed to meet their daily financial targets were subjected to physical abuse, such as being forced to run up and down the building or receiving electric shocks.
Prior to the raid on Saturday, the Taiwanese scam operators managed to escape with their forced workers from China, India, Laos, and Vietnam.
The rescued victims shared that many of the Thai workers who were lured into this scheme had entered Cambodia via the Poipet border and were subsequently sent to work at various casinos in the country.
