23-10-2023 (BANGKOK) Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, in his two months in office, has embraced the role of a “salesman,” actively engaging with investors and promoting Thailand’s mega-projects, including the southern “Land Bridge” initiative, to further the country’s strategic objectives.
During an interview with The Nation’s TV news channel, Prime Minister Srettha shared insights into his initial two months in office. He highlighted his meetings with leaders of neighboring nations, emphasizing their significance. His participation in a major United Nations assembly in mid-September allowed him to engage with numerous world leaders.
One of Prime Minister Srettha’s key priorities has been to foster discussions with business leaders regarding foreign investments in Thailand. He has embarked on visits to Cambodia, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, and Hong Kong, actively engaging with potential investors.
Prime Minister Srettha highlighted his discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, particularly focusing on basic infrastructure development in the ASEAN region, with future plans for infrastructure links to Europe and Africa. Srettha emphasized the importance of proposing new projects, such as high-speed trains from Laos to Thailand, to enhance regional connectivity.
The Thai Prime Minister also emphasized the significance of the southern “Land Bridge” mega-project, which has the potential to enhance Thailand’s strategic location and attract more foreign investors looking to relocate their production bases to the country.
In his discussions with ASEAN leaders, Prime Minister Srettha addressed various topics aligned with his government’s policies, aiming to boost investment and employment and expand the Thai economy by at least 5% in the next decade.
When asked about his upcoming foreign visits, Prime Minister Srettha revealed plans to visit Laos on October 30, followed by a trip to San Francisco on November 12 to attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit. He hopes to attract further foreign investments to Thailand during these visits.
Addressing his role as a “salesman,” Prime Minister Srettha emphasized the importance of maintaining equal relationships with all countries. He highlighted the need for comprehensive data preparation by both the Cabinet and the Board of Investment. Respectful dialogue from both sides would facilitate smooth negotiations, he added.
Regarding the conflict between Israel and Hamas and concerns for Thai workers, Prime Minister Srettha stated that discussions with Thai business groups, chambers of commerce, and industry associations had taken place. Thailand understands and sympathizes with the loss of lives and stands ready to offer assistance. Thirty Thai nationals have tragically lost their lives in the recent attack on Israel by Hamas.
Regarding the use of private negotiators to assist in discussions with business leaders and ensure guarantees, Prime Minister Srettha emphasized the sensitivity of the matter, particularly in securing the release of Thai hostages. He mentioned ongoing background efforts and numerous negotiations, stating that Thailand has successfully repatriated some Thai workers, with many expressing a desire to return home.
