12-9-2023 (BANGKOK) Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin informed the parliament on Tuesday of his government’s intention to request employers to increase the minimum daily wage to 400 baht at the earliest opportunity, aiming to provide better financial support to workers.
Regarding the wage hike, the prime minister highlighted the importance of negotiations involving three key stakeholders: workers, employers, and the government. The objective is to establish a reasonable minimum wage level, with the target of achieving 400 baht as swiftly as possible. This move is part of the government’s economic stimulus initiatives, primarily focused on improving the financial well-being of workers.
In addition to the wage increase, the government has identified several immediate measures to stimulate the economy. These include strategies for promoting tourism and reducing energy costs for both households and logistics operators, as outlined by Prime Minister Srettha.
It’s worth noting that the Pheu Thai Party, to which Prime Minister Srettha belongs, campaigned during the election with a policy proposal to raise the minimum daily wage to 600 baht by the year 2027. Currently, the minimum daily wage varies across different provinces, ranging from 328 baht to 354 baht. The most recent wage increase occurred in October of the previous year.
