17-4-2024 (BANGKOK) Authorities in Bangkok are on the hunt for an East Asian couple who executed a distraction theft of a 1-million-baht gold bracelet at a prestigious mall on Tuesday.
Staff at the jewellery store were shocked to discover the disappearance of the diamond-encrusted bracelet, valued at 1.04 million baht (US$28,000), after reviewing security footage that captured the daring theft.
Upon realising the theft, the store manager, 39-year-old Soammathat, promptly alerted the Pathumwan police at 6:39 p.m.
According to Soammathat’s account, a well-dressed couple, believed to be tourists, entered the store and requested to view the bracelet.
CCTV footage revealed the woman using her mobile phone to obstruct the view of staff while discreetly concealing the bracelet up her left sleeve. Simultaneously, her partner distracted the attention of the staff by manipulating his own phone and placing it in his right trouser pocket.
The couple swiftly exited the store and boarded a yellow-green taxi, prompting a pursuit by law enforcement.
Authorities tracked the taxi’s route, which veered left towards Rama IX Road before heading to Don Mueang International Airport via the Don Muang Tollway.
