11-7-2023 (BANGKOK) The Thai police are taking action to crack down on illegal Chinese businesses by cutting internet connections between the border of Tak province and Myanmar. Deputy National Police chief Pol Maj-General Surachate Hakparn stated on Tuesday (July 11) that the police are working in cooperation with the National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC) to address call-centre scams. Many Thais have been lured into working for these call centres in Myanmar under conditions of slavery.
Most of these scams operate from the Thailand-Myanmar border, and the connections are being cut with the collaboration of authorities in both Myanmar and China. Pol Maj-General Surachate Hakparn also mentioned that deals will be made with ethnic groups in areas where illegal Chinese businesses are based to ensure that criminals are caught.
A total of 173 internet towers are located on the border of Tak province, covering the Mae Ramat, Mae Sot, and Phop Phra districts. This action is expected to significantly reduce the number of illegal Chinese businesses and call-centre scams in the region.
