31-7-2023 (BANGKOK) Amidst the bustling local grocery shops of Chiang Mai, two European women found themselves in a humorous yet endearing situation when they mistakenly purchased Thai-style bamboo sticky rice steamers, believing them to be fashionable hats. The language barrier with the local vendor led to the hilarious misunderstanding.
The incident came to light when a Thai man, Surat Seehabut, shared pictures of the foreign women donning the unique “hats,” which resembled weaving baskets. In his caption, Surat explained, “At a local grocery shop, the foreign customers inquired, ‘What is this?’ and pointed at the sticky rice steamer. The vendor informed them, ‘This is a หวด (Huad), which means sticky rice steamer.’ They might have misheard ‘huad’ as ‘hat,’ so they bought them.”
The heartwarming encounter quickly caught the attention of Thai netizens, garnering over 4,700 reactions and 5,000 shares. Many of them expressed their admiration for the foreigners’ openness to local culture and their willingness to try something new. However, the pictures also sparked laughter among the commenters, finding the foreigners’ fashion choice charming and adorable.
