4-2-2024 (BANGKOK) Thai Foreign Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara has appealed to the European Union (EU) for assistance in addressing the crisis in Myanmar. He made this request during the 24th Asean-EU Ministerial Meeting (AEMM) held in Brussels on Friday.
The AEMM focused on discussing the bilateral relations between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) and the EU, with Mr. Parnpree emphasizing the need for a collective approach to maintaining global peace and stability amidst the numerous conflicts challenging the world.
Highlighting the situation in Myanmar, the Thai Foreign Minister expressed his hope that the EU would support Thailand’s humanitarian initiatives as an initial step towards constructive dialogue between all parties involved in Myanmar and the international community, with the ultimate aim of finding a solution.
“We can bring about changes by working together, Asean and the EU,” Mr. Parnpree stated.
He further stressed the importance of displaying determination in cooperating with global stakeholders to establish an Asean-EU strategic cooperative partnership. Mr. Parnpree highlighted the core principle of comprehensiveness in the Asean outlook on the Indo-Pacific (Aoip) and acknowledged the EU’s vision for the Indo-Pacific as free, open, rules-based, and inclusive.
Additionally, Mr. Parnpree sought cooperation and investment in modern, clean, and sustainable networks for energy, transportation, and digital technology, aiming to transform Asean and the EU into global growth hubs. He emphasized that improved infrastructure, enhanced transport connectivity, and streamlined trade facilitation in the region could contribute to the establishment of a dynamic Thai-EU Free Trade Area in the future.
